Guineas

Everyone needs a few of these
on the farm. They are a natural
insecticide. Guinea fowl are a
delight to have about the farm.
They are noisy however. The females
give out a delightful "Buckwheat"
as they happily forage. Both sexes
can give out a rapid "Ki-Ki-Ki"
when alarmed.

Many
people have difficulty sexing
adult guinea fowl. Males will
be larger, have a larger horn
and often times have the wattles
perpendicular to the head. Females
will be smaller, with a smaller
horn, and very small wattles.
Guineas
love to fly and roost. Ours love
to fly all over the homestead.
The females can become broody
if given enough privacy. The males
will charge with their wings raised
to court the females. Often they
will charge other species of birds
as well.
Guineas
are also credited with keeping
several types of "pests"
away. These pests include snakes,
rats, crows, ticks, and insects.
Guineas
have been kept and raised by man
for thousands of years.
